She was messing around with his head, and he didn't like it. He kept his expression composed, but it was like a storm within. "I don't care what you people see me by. What do you think of me? I'm despicable? I don't think myself above them. I hate them because they make my life more difficult. Up there is when I am following orders and running errands. Down here is my home, my version of your Camp Half Blood. Going there is like your version of a stupid quest."
The son of Hades stared at Lauren, not really having a heated voice full of protest anymore. He was just studying this girl, with the ability to understand prophecies, her father being in that influence. "I prefer to have a minimum amount of surprised in my future. This is my life, and I'm doing it my way. It's peaceful enough down here, unlike your chaotic world wracked with problems and small squabbles from gods."

Lauren paused "Actually Shade. I view you as unfortunate. Your being manipulated by your father to do his dirty with abd being rejected of the joys of life. You don't get to live and find your own purpose. I find mine was understanding and seeking. It was when I lived everything was worth it. Can you image awake to the same monotous thing? The fact chaos exists makes life rich and better. Why if you knew you would never lose what you had, you wouldn't fight do hard to keep it and defend it as fiercely," she told him.
Lauren nodded "But if you find being here a sanctuary than ok. Though I do question it. See in camp Chiron never controlled us. Or made us forget who were are friends and why they were willing to die for us,"

"Unfortunate?" Shade's expression morphed to that of confusion, and he gave Lauren a puzzled hazel look. "I have it better off than most, and I would know meeting enough ghosts down here. I prefer not to be ungrateful. My life is orderly. It's set out before me. I go out to do an errand for my father, and I get to have whatever fun there is to have then before coming back." He raised his hands, indicating his surroundings. "There's everything you could want here. Yet at camp, there are some who object their hatred towards you. I prefer living here. It's been my home longer than you think. You can say...I've grown attached to it. And my lifestyle that you find so unfortunate."
His expression returned to normal nonchalance once more, and he warned quietly, "I would not speak of my father that way. Everything he does has a purpose, it is not my position to question him. I don't mind because I am satisfied with what I have now. I didn't fit in at camp among you heroes because I simply wasn't one."

Lauren Gray shook her head "No. I like the Underworld. It's not a bad place. I meant your situation is unfortunate. You don't get to choose. When was the last time you were asked your opinion? What you wanted? What is it, or Who is it Shade that you want to be? she asked him "Your alive. You get a chance to change that." she told him with a shrug.
Lauren smiled "No Shade. A hero isn't born. We don't waltz into camp heroes. Heroes are made. The things you do deide wether or not you are a hero. They say the fact I gave my life to destroy a monster and help the questers makes me a hero. Others say I was a hero before because I help people find hope. Now I don't consider either heroic. In my point of view. A hero is someone who undergoes a journey, nd has passed its tests. Psychologically or physically a hero is someone who suffers and still arises from the ashes, someone who doesn't give up and fights for what they think is right. A hero stands up for themselves. Surely you know what you stand for. So if this is it, and you are standing for what you believe in. Then you are a hero in a sense, or becoming one. You suffered enough, and you are still arising."

Shade gave her a tiny smile, "Yesterday. Whether I wanted to go train or sleep in." He told her, eyes calm and steady as he watched her for a reaction. "I get quite a lot of choices down here. I'm not complaining about it, nearly everyone does what I say. This isn't that bad of a life. I only obey orders when I am given them...That's...rarely any time."
He sighed, annoyed at the fact that she was right. "Well, I don't want to be a hero. I'm not cut out to be one, and I think sacrificing yourself didn't need to be done. You had potential, and you threw it away. The Fates are particularly cruel to heroes. It's calm here, I don't have to put m life on the line. I am protecting my way of life and what I have down here. I have suffered nothing."

Lauren nodded starting to walk towards the meadows that headed outside the Isles. "And what sort of orders do you get?" she asked him calmly. Her blue eyes turning to see if he would follow. She was particularly fond of these meadows. Mostly because she could be calm here, a rare few ghosts choosing to be in these meadows for the mere fact it was toward the exit.
Lauren smiled at him "Whats life without a bit of suffering. Pain is good. Not in the sense you have to go out and find it. But pain lets you know the difference between ok and happy. When you are in pain you know its not good, but when the pain goes away you finally feel happy. It's a strange system really," she told him.
Lauren then shook her head. "Shade you don't get to pick wether your a hero or not. The fact you have been chosen on a side as a key player already makes you on your way to being a hero. ts part of the hero's journey. Begin with the call to action. You were called by Hades to kill Kathrine. Refusal to call. You got yourself...disciplined I suppose this Shade would call it. Into the abyss. You tried and failed to kill her, then you attacked camp, then you killed Julien. Seems like you are already taking action and going into this metaphorical abyss." she told him with a shrug.
She then paused "By the way have you seen Julien? the son of Demeter?" that's who was missing. How could she have forgotten? Then again she has lost track of time...

Shade shrugged, "Sending stuff out of the Underworld up there. Running a few errands. Whatever my old man feels like throwing at me. Sometimes...assassin missions." It was more exciting, but much less moral. He didn't say he liked it, but he didn't say he didn't like it either. Whoever or however he killed, it would be pardoned in the afterlife, so he was indifferent. It was a job. The Fates permitted these people to die, anyway. He didn't break fate, or orders.
"Then I'm happy all the time." Shade turned to Lauren with a raised brow, pushing back his hood. His bangs still shadowed his eyes. "I rarely feel pain. I'm tolerant." It was a blunt statement, and quite rhetorical. "So you're saying," the son of Hades slipped a hand out of his black jean's pocket and pointed at her, "that I'm on a journey to be a mighty hero like those in the epic stories? I'm not Odysseus, and I certainly don't feel changed. Besides, the punishment was fit. I failed in an idiotic way. I showed weakness- didn't finish the job." He huffed and shook his head as she moved on from the subject, "I don't really know Julien. He should be around here, unless the mighty Lord decided today was to be his jackpot of the month for messing around in something not his business. Tina should've stayed down here. She wouldn't have to get stuck in a war."

Lauren shook her head "So you never go up there unless its to do something for someone else? For the man who, let me guess, only calls for you when he needs something?" she asked him. Head tilted to the side.
Lauren watched Shade "You look nicer without the hood, honestly. It doesn't make you clique," she told him with a grin. "So I suppose you enjoy not remembering anything before your father? Do you remember life with your mother, do you remember if you have siblings? What do you remember about your life Shade? I'm curious since it seems everytime I see you its different," she told him.

"Yup," Shade replied blatantly, looking at her, "Seriously, my life here isn't that bad- I told you already." He was caught off guard by her comment, and a slight hint of color touched his cheeks before quickly fading away. He wasn't accustomed to praise, much less friendliness. Ghosts usually didn't want to seem like potential friends. However, hesitation took away the chance for him to reply with some thanks. He pretended that he hadn't heard the comment instead.
"I never said-" The son of Hades cut off at the mention of his mother. things were complicated by that. It wasn't something he ever spoke of, and he remembered perfectly well, actually, now that Hades had returned his memories to him. "I remember," he said quietly, "and I don't have any siblings. It's always been like this. I was just showing you a different side undercover. It was an act."
"What about Summer? You made her a promise." Shade brushed away the nagging voice inside his head. He had just done that to keep his little cover as a spy and act nice to his younger weakling of a sister.

Lauren laughed lightly "Not used to compliments? I didn't think it would've been enough to make you blush," she teased lightly. Then her focus returned to their conversation "What is it you remember about your past then?" she asked. Since now that he knew it, even if he interpreted it oddly, she could find out and remind him later. Unless it sad bad...

Shade shifted uncomfortably, shoving his hands deeper into his black jean pockets. He felt like hiding under his hood again, but he made no other movement to show his discomfort. "Yeah, I'm not used to it." He admitted quietly. Hades gave nods of approval, but nothing more than that. He didn't expect the cold Ruler of the Underworld to do such a thing anyway.
At the mention of his past, his expression darkened, and he turned away. "That's not something you need to know. Don't you think you're being a little personal?" He asked, a hint of bitterness touching his voice.

Lauren tilted her head "I suppose I'm not surprised though. Your father is known to be cold." she told him thoughtfully faintly remembering jokes from when she was alive. "You know my father loves giving compliments. But then again he sings or makes poems of nearly everything. And compliments are easier,"
She paused shaking her head "I suppose... But I'm dead so personal stuff don't really matter. No secrets down here," she told him with a shrug. There was no secrets down here. Everybody know what you lived for and what you died for. Everybody finds out eventually because they have eternity to find out, and many get bored.

"I don't mind." Shade said almost to quickly. His eyes turned away from hers. he knew already that it was extremely difficult to get any kind of praise from a god, and even more so from the Lord of the Underworld. He swallowed, controlling his fluctuating emotions. Why was he letting her words get to him. "Yeah, Lord Apollo, I haven't met him, but my father doesn't think highly of him. I prefer not to judge a book by its cover." He raised a brow at the ghost to point out her earlier saying.
"Well, I'm still alive, whether down here in my home or not. I have plenty of secrets that I want to keep." He made his point. He wasn't going to say anything.

Lauren smiled slightly at Shade "I suppose so, but Apollo isn't too bad. A bit odd, but I don't question him. He's nice enough..." she told him with a shrug thinking of the fading memories she could remember.
Lauren shook her head "It's a small place. Secrets don't last long," she told him with a grin. It in a sense was like high school, whispers echoed through the Underworld and reached nearly everybody's ears.

Shade looked up at her, a moment of hesitation crossing his eyes. "It fades after you spend more time. Will you ever try for rebirth?" He asked after pointing out her memories. In a way, he was the same. He had switched identities and memories more than once, but he had promised it to his father. His freedom was not his anymore. He didn't mind, either. Maybe the other Shade would. Which one was the real one? What he felt now was true to his gut. The campers disgusted him. Lauren here was kind enough as a companion. That was all.
"Not if you don't leak them." the son of Hades told her quietly in return.
